German retailer Asphaltgold links with ASICS for a new collaboration set on the EX89 — the first time the two have worked together since 2018.
The ASICS EX89 returns as a faithful creation of the iconic GEL-EXTREME basketball silhouette. Originally created in the 80s by a young Toshikazu Kayano (yes, that Kayano) this shoe captures the transitional state of performance footwear in 1989 perfectly. With an updated feel thanks to a sockliner and midsole with FF BLAST™ – the EX89 is better than it’s ever been.
Asphaltgold’s design is inspired by the spontaneity of jazz, earning the nickname “Impromptu” which it honours through mixed materials and colours. The uppers are kept mostly clean with a combination of nubuck, suede and smooth leather in neutral tones of soft white. The signature ASICS stripes are finished in a rough-cut taupe suede, with the back slash in steel grey running through the quarter and into the sole for a subtle yet unique look.
Much like the jazz which inspired them, the shoe is cool, calm and collected with a touch of unpredictability.
